Bigbury Strand

With breathtaking views in an area of outstanding natural beauty, the lovely sandy beach at Bigbury-on-Sea, Devon, is a true gem. The shallow waters make it a perfect family-friendly beach. We saw many people enjoying their paddle boards and kayaks here as well. At low tide, you can walk across the sands to Burgh Island and enjoy a drink outside the Pilchard Inn. You should also see the purpose-built Sea Tractor, which runs between Burgh Island and Bigbury Beach. There is plenty of parking and toilets available in the nearby car parks. Note that our phones occasionally struggled to pick up a signal.

It's not a nice beach at all, overcrowded and quite unpleasant to walk on

Salcombe is undoubtedly the Jewel in the Crown of the South West's estuaries. It boasts numerous golden sandy beaches that are perfect for swimming. When the tide is in, there are miles of safe, sheltered waters ideal for sailing or motor boating, along with amazing creeks to explore. The area also features wonderful coastal paths for wandering. There are plenty of accommodation options, ranging from luxurious hotels to quality B&Bs, as well as excellent camping and caravan sites. The food scene is fantastic, with a variety of options including specialty fish and crab restaurants.

Abbey River beach

Review by Richard White. This beach is not accessable by vehicle as the road the the coast is a private one (two locked gates). You can gain access via the SW Coastal path which runs alongside or footpath from Hartland Quay or Stoke. The roadway is open for pedestrians who are visiting Hartland Abbey (seasonal only). You cannot access the beach with a bike. Closest parking is 2km walk at Hartland Quay or 1.5km from the Hamlet of Stoke (limited parking). As highlighted in reports there are no facilities at this beach.

South Milton Sands

Putsborough beach

This beach is a hidden gem, with Baggy Head peninsula providing protection from the South West winds, making it less windy than Woolacombe most days. There is a nice cafe a few steps away, but the toilets are located further up near the far side of the car park. The parking fee of £11 for the day may seem a bit high, but it's only £10 if you don't mind the 3km walk from Woolacombe. The views are stunning and the waves are perfect for body boarding. Surfing conditions depend on the weather, but you can catch some good barrels. Surf board rentals are available near the top of the car park.
